37 Boko Haram Attack Victims in Yobe Set for Burial Amid Rising Tensions

Following a deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Mafa village, Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State, 37 of the 87 victims’ bodies are set for burial on Tuesday morning.

The Deputy Governor of Yobe State, Idi Barde Gubana, will attend the burial on behalf of Governor Mai Mala Buni, who is currently on an official trip abroad.

The attack occurred on Sunday around 4 p.m. as worshippers were concluding their Asir prayers at a mosque.

The assailants, reportedly on a revenge mission, opened fire on the congregation after separating elderly men and herdsmen from others.

The 37 bodies recovered from the scene are being kept at Babangida General Hospital, with the burial scheduled to take place at the Emir’s palace in Tarmuwa town at 10 a.m.

The remaining 50 decomposed corpses are still in Mafa, awaiting mass burial.

A survivor, who requested anonymity, recounted narrowly escaping the attack after spotting the insurgents outside the mosque. He expressed disappointment over the absence of security operatives during the assault and afterward.

Security sources indicate that Boko Haram may have targeted the village on suspicion that locals had been providing intelligence to security agencies.

Residents have raised concerns about insufficient security presence despite ongoing operations against terrorists in the area.
