World Bank Approves $1.57bn Loan for Nigeria

The World Bank has approved $1.57 billion in financing to support Nigeria in strengthening human capital and building climate resilience, according to a statement released on Monday.

The funds are designated for three projects: $500 million for governance improvements in education and health, $570 million for enhancing primary healthcare, and $500 million for the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project.

The international lender stated that the projects will help improve health outcomes for women, children, and adolescents, and address the effects of climate change, including floods and droughts, through better dam safety and irrigation.

The Primary Healthcare Provision Strengthening Programme will focus on improving service delivery in primary healthcare, while the HOPE-GOV programme aims to tackle governance issues in education and health sectors.

The Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project (SPIN) will concentrate on dam safety and water resource management for hydropower and irrigation in selected regions.

The World Bank noted that the approval underscores its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development goals, especially in human capital and climate resilience.

The approval was made on September 26, 2024, and emphasizes the need for Nigeria to strengthen service delivery and governance in key sectors to achieve sustainable growth.
