EFCC Secures Convictions of 35 Individuals for Internet Fraud in Ibadan

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of two siblings, Samuel Adedeji Adeboye and Charles Adedamola Adeboye, along with 33 others, for various internet fraud offenses in Ibadan.

The accused were sentenced by Justices Ladiran Akintola, Bayo Taiwo, and O.S. Adeyemi of the Oyo State High Court after pleading guilty to separate one-count charges of impersonation, obtaining by false pretenses, and possession of fraudulent documents.

Samuel Adeboye was convicted for impersonating an individual named James Jonathan, while Charles Adeboye aided another fraudster by receiving funds amounting to N200,000. Each brother was sentenced to one year in prison, with Samuel given an option of a N100,000 fine and Charles a N30,000 fine.

Other defendants received varying sentences. Justice Taiwo sentenced Adisa to five months in prison or a N150,000 fine, while Okoh received four months. Emmanuel was ordered to complete five months of community service, and several others were similarly assigned community service without the option of a fine.

In addition to their sentences, all convicts forfeited items recovered from them to the federal government. This included multiple luxury vehicles, such as four Lexus cars and a Mercedes Benz, which were deemed proceeds of their fraudulent activities. The convictions underscore the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat internet fraud in Nigeria.
