Justice Sylvanus Oriji of the High Court in Abuja has acquitted former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye of charges brought by the Federal Government, concluding a legal battle that began six years ago.
Melaye was cleared of two charges related to allegations of providing false information about an attempted assassination on his life in 2017.
The case has faced numerous delays, notably the passing of Justice Aromeh Akogu, who was overseeing the matter at the time.
The Attorney General’s Office formally charged Melaye on January 31, 2018, asserting that his claims were unfounded, which Melaye denied when he pleaded not guilty on March 1, 2018.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Melaye continued to allege attempts on his life, including accusations against the Kogi State police in July 2018 and claims of a conspiracy by state authorities in March 2019.
In a celebratory post on social media platform X, Melaye expressed gratitude to his legal team and reaffirmed his faith in divine justice, stating, “Justice served after six years. Justice delayed is never justice denied. God alone be praised.” He highlighted his legal victories against the Federal Government, declaring, “12 cases all won by God.”
