Harris and Trump in Tight Presidential Race as Election Day Draws Near

With less than 48 hours until the presidential election, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are making frantic last-minute pushes across swing states to secure a decisive edge.

Over 76 million people have already cast their ballots, and the race remains historically close.

Trump began his day with a rally in Pennsylvania, where he doubled down on unfounded claims of election rigging.
“The fate of our nation is in your hands. On Tuesday, you have to stand up,” he told supporters.

Meanwhile, Harris spent the day in Michigan, a crucial Great Lakes state, beginning in Detroit and ending with an evening rally at Michigan State University.

The candidates’ campaign styles and visions for the future couldn’t be further apart, and the race has seen dramatic twists and turns.

A final New York Times/Siena poll on Sunday showed incremental changes in key battleground states, but the results remained within the margin of error.

Trump is expected to reject the results if he loses, as he did four years ago. He has seized on isolated irregularities to amplify his claims of widespread “cheating.”

Republicans are also scrambling to contain fallout in Pennsylvania after a speaker at Trump’s New York rally described the US territory of Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”

Harris, meanwhile, is desperate to shore up support in the Great Lakes states. She risks losing the support of a 200,000-strong Arab-American community that has denounced Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

However, her campaign has taken comfort from the large proportion of women turning out among early voters, with reproductive rights emerging as a top voter concern.
