UK Trade Unions Suspend Strikes, Honors Late Queen

Trade unions in a piece of recent information have suspended their strike action as a mark of respect following the death of the Queen, canceling walkouts that had been planned for postal and rail workers.

According to Dave Ward, general secretary of the Communication Workers Union, the union had called off the second day of a 48-hour strike at Royal Mail on Friday, out of respect for the Queen’s “service to the country and her family”.

The RMT rail workers’ union said it was suspending strike action on the railways it had planned for September 15 and 17. Aslef, the union representing train drivers, has postponed the strike action it had planned for September 15 and the TSSA, which represents rail managers, also said it would cancel planned industrial action to respect the period of mourning.

The Trades Union Congress, the umbrella body for the UK’s trade union movement, has not confirmed whether it will go ahead with its annual gathering, which had been due to take place in Brighton next week.
