Abia State Confirms One Monkeypox Case

Abia State Government has confirmed one case of monkeypox in Isiala Ngwa, with 13 suspected cases reported so far, Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu announced.

Of the cases, one tested positive, nine were negative, and two are pending classification. No casualties have been reported.

To curb the spread of the viral disease, residents are urged to maintain personal hygiene and practice social distancing.

A treatment center has been established at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Agozi Azodo, emphasized the importance of regular hygiene and advised minimizing contact with animals. She reassured residents that the state is prepared to handle any outbreak and encouraged prompt reporting of suspected cases.

In addition, the state government has announced plans to renovate and retrofit 200 primary health centers by December, as part of its ongoing health sector transformation.

The project is set to begin in September.
