ADC Gubernatorial Candidate in Edo State, Derek Izedonmwen Condemns Attack on Followers

In a shocking display of political violence, taxi drivers bearing ADC Gubernatorial Candidate Derek Izedonmwen’s campaign branding were brutally attacked and had their vehicles smashed by PDP thugs along Airport Road in Benin city.

Eyewitnesses recount brutal attacks in Benin city yesterday, leaving the community in fear as political tensions escalate.

“I was driving to drop off a passenger when men wearing PDP T-shirts and other PDP party symbols started throwing stones at my car,” said the taxi driver whose vehicle was vandalized.

“They shouted at me, saying I supported the wrong candidate. I was terrified. They broke my rear windshield and side mirrors, and I had to run for my life.”

Michael, another driver, shared: “I saw them attacking my colleague’s car, so I drove away quickly. But they chased me, try to smash my headlights and taillights. I’m still shaking with fear. We’re just trying to make a living.”

Derek Izedonmwen, ADC Gubernatorial Aspirant, condemned the attacks: “This senseless violence reveals the PDP’s desperation and intimidation tactics We won’t be deterred. We’ll continue campaigning peacefully and urge our supporters to remain calm. We demand that authorities take action to protect citizens and ensure a peaceful electoral process.”

This violence highlights the deteriorating political climate in Benin, sparking widespread condemnation. A political analyst noted: “The PDP’s resort to violence and intimidation is a sign of weakness and desperation. It’s unacceptable and undermines democracy. Authorities must act to prevent further violence and ensure a free and fair election.”

In a separate, tragic incident along the same Airport Road, alleged armed PDP supporters clashed violently with a convoy, which had the APC gubernatorial candidate, resulting in the loss of life and several injuries.

The ADC candidate, in a press release, stated: “This senseless violence is a grave assault on our democratic principles and the peace of our beloved Edo State.”

As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, the Governor must immediately intervene and call these marauding thugs to order. It is his duty to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations.

Derek Izedonmwen also noted that “Politics should not be a zero-sum game where violence and intimidation are used as tools to suppress opposition. Edo State, known for its proud and civilized people, must not be tarnished by the desperate actions of those who seek to win at any cost. This race to anarchy is a path where everyone is a loser, and it is the ordinary citizens who suffer the most.”

“We utterly condemn all forms of political violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to them during this difficult time. We also wish a speedy recovery to all those injured in these heinous attacks.”

“We urge the so-called establishment political parties ( Labour, APC, and PDP) to listen to the voice of the people and engage in a respectful and democratic contest. Let us allow the will of the people to prevail through peaceful and fair means. Our campaign remains committed to promoting a vision for Edo State that is inclusive, progressive, and rooted in the principles of democracy and respect for all.”

“To the voters and supporters of the ADC, I extend my deepest sympathies and gratitude for your unwavering support despite the challenges. Your courage and commitment to change inspire us to continue this journey with even greater resolve. We stand with you and promise to uphold the dignity and honour of our beloved state.”

“Let us come together to build a future where democracy thrives, and every voice is heard. Edo State deserves leaders who will protect and serve, not intimidate and oppress. Join us in this noble cause to bring about the positive change we all envision for Edo State.” Derek Izedonmwen, the ADC Gubernatorial concluded
