The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, and lawmakers have called on the Federal Government to reverse the recent increase in petrol prices as Nigerians face severe scarcity and soaring costs of the commodity.
Afenifere, through its spokesman Jare Ajayi, urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to revert to the old pump price, arguing that the timing of the increase worsens the economic hardships faced by citizens.
The group criticized NNPCL for making Nigerians pay for its inefficiencies, noting that the recent price hike negatively affects living costs and overall well-being.
Similarly, House of Representatives member, Alhassan Doguwa called the price hike unacceptable, urging the government and NNPCL to revert to the previous pump price. He pledged his committee’s commitment to address crude oil theft and secure oil pipelines, aiming to stabilize the supply.
In response to public outcry, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu assured Nigerians that the Senate would address concerns about the fuel price hike once the National Assembly resumes, emphasizing the Senate’s commitment to supporting citizens during these challenging times.
Fuel scarcity has worsened across major cities, with prices ranging from N880 to N1,500 per litre, creating long queues and pushing many to turn to black market sources.
