Alau Dam Floods Displaces Thousands in Maiduguri, Tinubu Orders Evacuation

Thousands of residents in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, and parts of Jere Local Government Area have been displaced following the collapse of the dyke and overflow of Alau Dam, located about 10 kilometers from the city.

The flooding, which began on Monday, has submerged major areas, including the Shehu’s palace, Monday Market, and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

President Bola Tinubu has however, called for the immediate evacuation of people from the affected areas, expressing deep concern about the devastating impact of the flooding.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended condolences to affected families and pledged federal support to mitigate the humanitarian crisis.

The flood has destroyed homes, bridges, and roads, cutting off several communities in Borno and neighboring Yobe State, where only five local government areas remain accessible to Damaturu, the state capital.

President Tinubu assured Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State that the Federal Government would collaborate closely to address the immediate needs of those affected.

Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Director-General Barkindo Mohammed described the situation as “terrible,” stating that rescue operations and distribution of sandbags have commenced.

Despite earlier assurances by the state government that measures would be taken to prevent the disaster, the floodwaters continue to spread, affecting critical infrastructure and displacing thousands.

Authorities, including the police and emergency response teams, have urged residents to avoid flooded routes and relocate to safer areas as efforts to contain the flooding continue.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been directed to assist in the ongoing relief operations.
