Borno Gov Boosts Agriculture, Cuts Palliative Aid

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has announced a 90% reduction in the distribution of palliatives previously allocated to victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.

This decision was revealed as he distributed food aid, including rice and grains, to 250,000 flood victims across the state’s 27 local government areas.

Speaking at the event on Wednesday, Governor Zulum explained that the initiative aimed to alleviate the hardships caused by last year’s flood disaster, which severely impacted businesses and residents’ livelihoods.

The governor stated that while 100,000 people in the Maiduguri metropolis and surrounding areas will benefit from the distribution, over 150,000 beneficiaries across 25 local government councils will also receive the palliatives.

He said, “We are all aware that our beloved state has yet to fully recover from the devastating flood disaster that recently affected Maiduguri, Jere, and other communities. Many families are still counting their losses.

“I am deeply moved by the pain and hardship this disaster has caused, especially for the most vulnerable among us—those who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and even loved ones.”

As part of preparations for the blessed month of Ramadan, today’s event marks the official launch of the Ramadan food distribution program, aimed at supporting 250,000 of the most vulnerable individuals. Among the beneficiaries, 100,000 are from Maiduguri and its surrounding areas, while an additional 6,000 people from each of the state’s 26 local government areas will also receive food assistance.

Regarding the 90% reduction in palliative distribution, Governor Zulum explained that the decision was driven by the bumper harvest recorded across various communities in the state.

“Our perseverance has strengthened my belief that agriculture is not just a means of survival but a powerful tool for economic empowerment. As a result, the State Government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for our youth and entrepreneurs to engage in agribusiness and other productive ventures,” he stated.

We will continue to invest in agricultural inputs, infrastructure, and support programs to strengthen the sector and drive sustainable economic growth.

“This approach will not only empower our people to become self-reliant but will also significantly reduce government spending on palliatives. Consequently, moving forward, the distribution of palliatives will be reduced by 90% to promote self-sufficiency and long-term development,” he stated.

The governor also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, sister states, and supportive individuals for their assistance to the state.

He said, “We appreciate the Federal Government, sister states, and compassionate individuals and organizations across the country. Their solidarity, generosity, and commitment to our people’s well-being have been a great source of encouragement. To everyone who has extended a helping hand, I say: Thank you.”
