Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Monday.
The pontiff passed away peacefully at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, within the Vatican City, according to the Vatican News Service.
“His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in an official statement.
Tributes have begun pouring in from around the world. French President Emmanuel Macron described Pope Francis as “a man of humility,” while Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof praised him as “a role model for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.”
The Pope’s passing comes just a day after he appeared in St. Peter’s Square, where he delivered a heartfelt “Happy Easter” message to thousands of worshippers gathered to celebrate the Christian holiday.
