Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Conservative Party, has unveiled a sweeping proposal to reform the UK’s immigration system, introducing stricter rules for migrants seeking British citizenship.
Badenoch’s plan would extend the waiting period for citizenship eligibility to at least 15 years, with the goal of making citizenship a “privilege to be earned, not an automatic right”.
In a video statement, Badenoch emphasized that “Britain is our home, it’s not a hotel. It’s time to tell the truth on immigration and propose real plans.” She argued that reducing immigration would improve people’s connections with the country.
The proposed policy changes include:
Extended Waiting Period: Increasing the waiting period for migrants to apply for indefinite leave to remain from five years to ten years.
Net Contributor Requirement: Requiring migrants to be net contributors with a high enough salary, especially if they want to bring family members with them.
Stricter Eligibility Criteria: Banning people who move into the country illegally or overstay their visa from ever getting leave to remain or a passport, and denying residency status to migrants with criminal records or those who claim benefits or social housing.
Increased Application Timeline: Extending the time required before someone with indefinite leave to remain can apply for a British passport from 12 months to five years, resulting in a minimum wait of 15 years.
Badenoch’s proposal aims to reform the UK’s immigration system, prioritizing contribution and accountability. The plan is expected to be developed further, with a detailed policy to be presented before the next election.
