CORAN Opposes Petrol Import Amid Dangote Refinery Supply

The Crude Oil Refiners Association of Nigeria (CORAN) has condemned petroleum marketers’ plans to import Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), despite the availability of petrol from the Dangote Refinery.

Publicity Secretary of CORAN, Eche Idoko, criticized the move, highlighting that some imported petrol is often substandard, blended in Malta or Togo. This comes after 141 million liters of PMS were reportedly being shipped to Nigeria, following the full deregulation of the downstream oil sector by the Federal Government.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently announced a new petrol price range of N950 to N1,019.22 per liter across its retail outlets after lifting Dangote Refinery’s petrol, fueling price disagreements between NNPCL and Dangote.

Idoko assured that Dangote Refinery would not become a monopoly, given its subscription to CORAN and oversight from the Petroleum Industry Act.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) assured that imported petrol would undergo three quality tests before being sold in the country.

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote previously stated that the commencement of his refinery would put an end to fuel importation in Nigeria.
