In the early hours of Monday, a dynamite explosion rocked the Secretariat of the Action People’s Party (APP) located along the GRA axis in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The explosion, which occurred around 1am, caused extensive damage, shattering windows and doors, and destroying other property, including the building’s ceiling and fittings.
The incident, reportedly carried out by assailants who threw dynamites into the building, is believed to be politically motivated. This speculation is linked to recent developments in the state’s political landscape, particularly amid rumors that State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is considering switching his allegiance and supporters to the APP. This potential shift follows allegations that his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, has hijacked the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
A party official, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed being informed of the attack around 3am and called for an investigation into the incident. “This is politically motivated and there is no two ways about it,” the official stated. “They know that the APP is a fast-growing political party in the state. We call on the police to investigate this and arrest the culprits.”
At the time of reporting, the state police command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, had not yet responded to inquiries about the incident.
