EU To Hit Back At Trump’s New Tariffs

The European Union has announced plans to implement countermeasures in response to new tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump while remaining open to negotiations.

Speaking on Thursday during a summit with Central Asian leaders in Uzbekistan, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described Trump’s decision as a “major blow to businesses and consumers worldwide.” She emphasized that Europe is prepared to take action to safeguard its interests.

She warned that the tariffs would result in millions of citizens facing higher costs for groceries, medication, and transportation, while also driving up inflation and disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable.

Von der Leyen stated that the EU is finalizing its initial package of retaliatory measures and is preparing additional steps to protect European businesses if negotiations with the U.S. fail.

She urged EU citizens to remain confident, assuring them that Europe is well-prepared to navigate the challenges ahead.

Von der Leyen also announced discussions with the automotive and pharmaceutical industries, which have been hit hardest by the tariffs.

On Wednesday, Trump introduced new blanket tariffs of 10 percent on most U.S. imports, with higher penalties for countries with significant trade deficits. He stated that imports from the EU would be subject to a 20 percent tariff.
