The Federal Government has initiated plans to utilize the Kiri Dam in Adamawa State for hydroelectric power generation. Located in Shelleng, the dam currently serves as a major water reservoir for the irrigation of Dangote Sugar Refinery’s cane plantation in Numan.
The Director of Dams and Reservoir Operations, Ali Dalla, confirmed that the government has commenced retrofitting exercises to update the dam for power generation.
“We have found out that the dam is capable of generating electricity,” Dalla stated during a facility tour to assess the dam’s integrity.
Although the study is ongoing, Dalla expressed optimism about the dam’s condition, noting that it remains in good shape despite being over 40 years old.
The move aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and boost economic growth. As the country explores alternative energy options, the Kiri Dam project is expected to contribute significantly to the national grid.
With the government’s commitment to renewable energy, Nigerians can anticipate increased electricity supply and reduced reliance on non-renewable sources.
Dalla emphasized the importance of ensuring the dam’s integrity, citing the need to prevent recurrence of floods similar to the Alau Dam incident in Borno State. He assured that the physical inspection has yielded positive results, but further internal examinations are necessary to confirm the dam’s overall health.
