The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced that the Federal Government is prepared to receive Nigerians deported from the United States. The commission’s Director of Media and Corporate Affairs, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for overseeing such developments.
He further revealed that the Federal Government has already established an inter-agency committee to manage the situation in the event of mass deportations. The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
However, the NiDCOM spokesperson emphasized that the commission was not aware of any Nigerians in the United States currently being processed for deportation. It is worth noting that approximately 3,690 Nigerians in the U.S. are at risk of deportation as part of former President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants.
According to a document compiled by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and its Enforcement and Removal Operations unit, the data—reviewed by our correspondent on Tuesday—categorizes individuals by nationality and the number of people facing deportation.
The document also clarified that as of November 24, 2024, a total of 1,445,549 non-citizens were on ICE’s non-detained docket with final removal orders.
Titled “Noncitizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship,” the report revealed that Mexico and El Salvador had the highest numbers of individuals facing deportation, with 252,044 and 203,822 cases, respectively.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is responsible for protecting the country from cross-border crime and illegal immigration that pose a threat to national security.
Meanwhile, last Thursday, hundreds of migrants were arrested, while others were flown out of the country on military aircraft as Donald Trump’s mass deportation operation officially began.
Reports show that Nigerians and other African illegal immigrants in the United States may be the next target for deportation by the American government.
