FG To Monitor Speeding On Third Mainland Bridge With CCTV

The Federal Government has raised concerns over motorists’ excessive speeding on the newly rehabilitated Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, highlighted this issue during a stakeholder engagement on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project (Phase One and Phase Two) in Lagos.

He also discussed ongoing rehabilitation efforts on major bridges in the state, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, and Eko Bridge.

The minister urged motorists to reduce their speed on the bridge, warning that excessive speeding could force the government to consider installing speed bumps.

“We have to talk to our people. The speed there is terrible. If we put speed bumps in, it will cause heavy traffic congestion on the bridge,” Umahi said.

He added that the government had installed Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on and beneath the bridge, with plans for their official inauguration soon. Officials will be on standby to monitor the footage and enforce speed regulations.

Umahi also announced that the bridge’s rehabilitation had been extended to Falomo, where streetlights and additional CCTV cameras have been installed. He revealed that all activities along the stretch would be monitored remotely from Abuja.

“Let me also announce that we have extended the bridge rehabilitation, creating a beautiful sight from the Third Mainland Bridge down to Falomo. We have installed streetlights and CCTV cameras,” Umahi stated.

He emphasized that surveillance would cover the entire stretch from Falomo to the Third Mainland Bridge, including the ramps.

“Whatever you are doing on that stretch, we can see you—it’s on camera, and we are also streaming it to Abuja. We will monitor everything from our office, just as we have done with the Second Niger Bridge,” he added.
