Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging for culpable homicide.
The court found Nwachukwu guilty of causing the death of his wife, Osinachi, on April 8, 2022.
In her judgment, Justice Nwosu-Iheme held that the prosecution had proven the burden of proof, stating that Nwachukwu’s actions led to Osinachi’s death. Nwachukwu was arraigned on June 3, 2022, on a 23-count charge bordering on homicide, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children and spouse, and spousal battery.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including the deceased’s two children, and submitted 25 documents as evidence. Nwachukwu testified in his own defense and called four other witnesses, tendering four exhibits.
Before the sentencing, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for mercy, while the prosecutor, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to apply the full force of the law. Justice Nwosu-Iheme subsequently sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on count one.
Additionally, Nwachukwu was sentenced to two years imprisonment each on counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18. He received six months imprisonment on count 10, three years imprisonment on count 11, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 on counts 6 and 7, respectively.
