Details of how four teenagers drowned while swimming at the Elegushi Beach, in the Lekki area of Lagos State has surfaced.
The teenagers who were 10 in number from Kuramo Senior College, Lekki, aged between 14 and 15, went to swim at the beach to celebrate the completion of their West African Examination Council School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) examination
While also confirming the incident, the management of Elegushi Beach, in a statement signed by Ayuba Elegushi said the students had defied warning to keep off from a certain section of the bridge.
According to Ayuba, the students did not take to the warning of the beach authority and the security team.
Ayuba said the beach authority were able to rescue six of the 10 student after receiving alert that they were drowning.
“The beach authority and security team turned the students back, the boys took a detour and went to an unmanned section of the beach area to swim,” the statement read.
“Unfortunately, about 10 of them were almost drowning before the beach security officers were alerted to the scene and six of them were rescued alive while four were still missing.
While the matter has been reported at the Ilasan Police Station, effort is still on to find the missing boys.”
The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.
Hundeyin said, “The teenagers were from Kuramo Senior College, Lekki. Four of them are missing. They are two males and two females. Efforts are on to recover their bodies. We have yet to meet with the parents of the victims.”
