Iran Launches Major Missile Barrage on Israel

Iran launched a large-scale missile assault on Israel Tuesday night, firing approximately 180 ballistic missiles in retaliation for the Israeli killings of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders.

The attack has escalated tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns of a broader regional conflict.

According to Israeli military reports, many of the missiles were intercepted by Israel’s defense systems, but some landed in central and southern regions of the country. Citizens were forced into bomb shelters as the barrage continued for over an hour. In response, Israel intensified airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon and announced a ground invasion to combat the militant group.

Tehran confirmed the missile strikes, warning of additional attacks if Israel retaliates.

Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian defended the assault as a decisive response to protect Iran’s interests, while also cautioning Israel that it had only seen a “glimpse” of Iran’s military capabilities.

International reactions have been swift, with the United Nations and European Union calling for a ceasefire and urging both sides to de-escalate. The UN Security Council is set to meet Wednesday to address the crisis, while EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned that the conflict could spiral out of control if retaliation continues.

US President Joe Biden, speaking from the White House Situation Room, pledged full support for Israel and authorized military aid, including missile defense assistance. Biden described the Iranian attack as largely “ineffective” and emphasized the need for Israel to defend itself.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed swift retaliation, stating that Iran would pay for its actions. Meanwhile, the Palestinian militant group Hamas praised Iran’s missile strike, calling it a “heroic” act against Israeli forces.

With tensions running high, world leaders have called for de-escalation, fearing that continued hostilities could plunge the region into a larger conflict.
