All security aides assigned to Speaker Mojisola Meranda of the Lagos State House of Assembly have been withdrawn.
As of Thursday morning, police officers and other security personnel attached to the Speaker were no longer present. The authority behind the withdrawal remains unclear, but a source close to Meranda confirmed the development, expressing concern over her safety.
“All the Speaker’s security aides have been withdrawn, along with those assigned to the House of Assembly,” the source stated, adding that this situation has left Meranda vulnerable.
Reports indicate that the development comes amid speculation that Mojisola Meranda may step down as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The withdrawal of her security aides follows the intervention of key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former Osun and Ogun State Governors, Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba.
Leading a mediation panel, Akande and Osoba met with key stakeholders, including members of the Governance Advisory Council, last Sunday at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina.
According to members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) present at the meeting, the panel has recommended the resignation of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, with Mojisola Meranda also expected to step down. The proposal suggests that a new lawmaker from Lagos West should assume leadership of the House.
Meranda’s spokesperson, Ganzallo Victor, confirmed the situation, stating, “We don’t know why the authorities have taken this action, but all the police officers and other security personnel assigned to her have been withdrawn. She is on her own at the moment.”
Meanwhile, a source within Obasa’s camp revealed that all security aides attached to him have now been reinstated.
“They have restored all of Obasa’s security aides as of this morning,” the source said.
