A devastating fire swept through Ahịa Mgbede market in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.
The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of the morning, ravaged several shops and stalls, reducing millions of naira worth of goods and properties to ashes. As the fire raged on, business owners and traders watched in dismay as their livelihoods went up in flames. Despite the efforts of firefighters, who arrived at the scene after several minutes, the damage was extensive, leaving many to pick up the pieces and wonder how they will recover from the loss. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many affected traders struggling to come to terms with the magnitude of their loss.
One of the victims, identified simply as Uche, narrated the incident saying “We arrived this morning to find our shops reduced to rubble. The loss is immeasurable and has sent shockwaves through the entire business community.”
He added that the cause of the fire remained unknown but disclosed that many shop owners were severely affected. He also recounted how a female victim, overwhelmed with heartbreak and frustration, attempted to harm herself but was restrained and consoled by sympathizers.
The Anambra State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Unit, led by the state fire chief, Chukwudi Chiketa. The statement read, “The Anambra State Firefighters attended to a massive fire outbreak at Ahịa Mgbede, located opposite the Motor Spare Parts Market, Uruagu Nnewi, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.”
At 2:15 am on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, emergency services received a distress call, prompting a swift response from the Nnewi and Ogidi Fire Stations. Firefighters and firefighting equipment were rapidly deployed to the scene, where they battled to bring the blaze under control. Despite their tireless efforts, the fire briefly reignited earlier today. However, firefighters continue to work diligently to fully extinguish the flames. Fortunately, as of the latest update, no fatalities or injuries have been reported, according to the fire chief.
