A public dispute has erupted between two prominent traditional rulers in Nigeria, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
Oba Akanbi alleged that despite his support for Oba Ogunwusi’s ascension to the throne in 2015, the Ooni has been plotting his downfall. He claimed that the Ooni orchestrated his suspension from the Osun State Council of Obas and has been using other monarchs to destabilize his territory.
The Oluwo’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Alli, stated that the Ooni’s actions are a betrayal of the support and friendship he received from the Oluwo. “To my surprise, the same person I helped to the throne has been planning evil against me,” Oba Akanbi said.
However, the Ooni’s spokesperson, Otunba Moses Olafare, denied the allegations, describing them as “baseless and reckless.” He attributed the Oluwo’s suspension from the council to his own actions, specifically a public fight with a fellow traditional ruler.
The dispute between the two monarchs has sparked interest and concern among Nigerians, highlighting the complexities and challenges of traditional leadership in the country.
