The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have declared an indefinite strike, starting tonight, October 27, 2024, over unpaid salaries.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in universities is coordinating the nationwide strike.
The strike is in response to the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries, dating back to when NASU and SSANU joined the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in an industrial action during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for 50 percent payment of the withheld salaries, the Minister of Finance’s inaction has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.
The strike was initially scheduled for October 23 but was rescheduled to accommodate a Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches. The new strike date allows branch officers to be on ground before commencing the strike.
NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, signed a circular explaining the strategic change in timing for effective coordination and unity among the unions.
The unions have expressed frustration with the government’s lack of sincerity in addressing their demands, despite multiple notices and interactions. The strike will affect all federal and state-owned universities, as well as inter-university centers. Local demands can also be incorporated into the strike action.
The indefinite strike is a last resort for NASU and SSANU, seeking payment of outstanding salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government.
