The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured residents of Abuja that there is no cause for alarm following recent tremors experienced in Mpape, a suburb in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Director-General of NGSA, Prof. Olusegun Ige, confirmed that the agency is closely monitoring the situation and has found the tremors to be low in intensity, posing no significant threat to the environment.
According to NGSA, a series of tremors were recorded over five days, beginning on September 13, 2024. “Only one mild event was recorded on September 13th. Six events occurred on the 14th, while over 21 events were captured on the 15th with higher intensities. More than twenty tremors were recorded on the 16th of September,” the statement read
The agency explained that the tremors are a result of accumulated stress along fault lines in the area, with seismic energy released through fractures, affecting areas around Mpape and Katampe. Most of the tremors were rated as weak to light, measuring between III and IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale.
Prof. Ige assured the public that the NGSA is conducting real-time monitoring of its seismic stations and will provide updates if any major developments occur.
Residents of Mpape, Katampe, Maitama, and nearby areas are advised to remain calm as the tremors are classified as low-level events.
