The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has renewed its warning against irregular migration following a viral video showing stranded Nigerians in Libya.
Despite past evacuation efforts, many continue to risk dangerous routes, prompting calls for caution and tougher measures against traffickers.
NiDCOM spokespersons, Abdur-Rahman Balogun revealed that over 10,000 Nigerians were evacuated from Libya years ago through a coordinated effort led by NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa and approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, the recent video highlights ongoing challenges.
The International Organisation for Migration in Nigeria has evacuated nearly 4,000 more Nigerians in recent months. Still, many continue to travel to Libya, only to face the same predicaments, raising concerns about the persistence of irregular migration.
NiDCOM has reported the viral video to the Office of the National Security Adviser, which leads the multi-agency team overseeing evacuations. The commission urged a crackdown on traffickers facilitating dangerous migration routes.
Despite NiDCOM’s repeated advisories, many Nigerians continue to take risky migration paths, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and public awareness to prevent further tragedies.
