Nigeria Boosts Power Generation by 2,000MW in Two Years – Minister of Power

Nigeria has increased its power generation capacity by 2,000 megawatts in less than two years, bringing the total output to 6,003MW, according to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), led by its President, Margret Oguntala, Adelabu highlighted the rapid progress compared to the nearly 40-year period it took for Nigeria to move from 2,000MW in 1984 to 4,000MW by 2022.

“This can be attributed to the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the recognition of the power sector as a major driver of economic growth,” the minister said.

Adelabu acknowledged that while Nigeria’s power sector still faces challenges, the government remains committed to further improving electricity supply. He urged the NSE to strengthen collaborations with the ministry, enhance training programs, and mentor young engineers to ensure sustainable development in the sector.

He also emphasized the need for local production of power sector materials to boost employment and reduce reliance on imports.

In response, the NSE President assured the minister of the society’s commitment to providing technical expertise to drive innovation and improve infrastructure in Nigeria’s energy sector.
