The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its members in states yet to implement the new minimum wage to begin an indefinite strike from December 1, 2024.
This directive follows the National Executive Council’s (NEC) meeting, where the persistent delay and refusal by some state governments to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act were strongly condemned.
The NLC expressed deep frustration with the situation, labeling it a “betrayal” by governors and government officials who continue to deny workers their rightful wages amidst rising economic hardship.
In response, the NEC resolved to establish a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee to mobilize and sensitize workers and citizens on resisting this assault on their dignity and rights.
Furthermore, the NLC vowed to initiate industrial actions in non-compliant states until the minimum wage is fully implemented nationwide. The strike is set to begin on December 1, 2024, in states where the minimum wage has not been fully implemented by November 30, 2024.
The NLC also addressed the worsening economic situation, noting the unchecked rise in inflation and basic necessities becoming unaffordable for the average worker. The organization demanded concrete interventions from the Federal Government to alleviate the suffering, calling for comprehensive social protection policies to shield Nigerians from poverty.
In addition to the minimum wage implementation, the NLC urged a wage review across the nation, encompassing a review of policies that have negatively impacted Nigerian people.
With this stance, the NLC reaffirms its commitment to protecting workers’ rights and dignity.
The indefinite strike is poised to affect various sectors, underscoring the NLC’s resolve to secure justice for Nigerian workers.
