Nigeria, Mexico Deepen Trade Ties with Launch of Bilateral Chamber of Commerce

In a significant move to strengthen economic ties, the Mexican Embassy in Nigeria on Tuesday inaugurated the Nigeria-Mexico Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) and its new Board of Directors, signaling a renewed commitment to boost bilateral trade and investment.

Speaking at the launch ceremony in Abuja, Ambassador Alfredo Miranda, Mexico’s envoy to Nigeria, described the establishment of the NMCC as a fresh chapter in the economic, cultural, and strategic partnership between the two countries. He said the chamber would serve as a vital bridge for businesses, innovation, and opportunities across both nations.

“This is the moment we are certain to work, create new narratives, and show to people that together, Nigeria and Mexico are big powerhouses,” Miranda said. “The NMCC will act as a catalyst, offering market intelligence, supporting businesses, and fostering mutual understanding.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, represented by Amb. Anderson Madubuike, emphasized the need for stronger bilateral cooperation, highlighting that the NMCC’s launch came at a crucial time for global economic collaboration. “There is so much the two countries can do in advancing the global economy,” Tuggar said, urging African nations to assert their place in international affairs.

Also present was the Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Mr. Idi Mukhtar, who expressed optimism about agricultural investments, especially in red meat production, dairy processing, and animal health management. He noted that Nigeria imports over $1.5 billion worth of dairy annually and stressed the need to enhance domestic industry capacity.

NMCC President, Arim Pete, said the chamber would prioritize building trust and trade between the two nations. She noted Mexico’s position as the 12th largest economy globally and highlighted the complementary nature of both economies. “It is a good time for NMCC,” Pete stated. “The rules of trade have changed, and we must seize the opportunities.”

The inauguration attracted key figures, including Dele Oye, President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), alongside representatives from various Nigerian trade chambers, diplomats, and private sector leaders.

Though formally launched on Tuesday, NMCC was originally established in 2014 to promote bilateral trade, support regulatory navigation for businesses, and foster collaborations in job creation, technology, and knowledge exchange.
