NLC Accuses Government of Hostility, Demands Accountability After Raid

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the government of waging an assault against the organization after security forces raided its headquarters.

In a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, NLC leaders dismissed the police’s claim that the raid was targeting an international terrorist suspect, calling it a cover-up and demanding an apology, the return of seized property, and the release of those detained.

The NLC also condemned the government’s attempts to interfere in its internal affairs, particularly the proposal to limit the tenure of trade union leaders to two years. They argued this move breaches labor laws and international conventions.

The organization emphasized that it did not participate in the End-Hunger protest and criticized the government’s effort to conflate it with unrelated issues.

They also urged the government to prioritize dialogue on national challenges like hunger and insecurity, rather than meddling in opposition affairs.

The NLC warned that it will hold the police accountable for any future incidents involving its members and leaders.

The NLC further highlighted that the Registrar of Trade Unions had threatened their relationship with the Labour Party, citing legal provisions while overlooking constitutional and international protections for political expression.

They called for the release of those in custody, including NUEE executive Comrade Opalua Eleojo, and urged the government to cease intimidation tactics against the NLC and the broader public.
