The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to introduce measures aimed at easing the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.
This appeal was made by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in a communiqué co-signed with the union’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja.
The NEC convened to evaluate the well-being of Nigerian workers and the general population amid the ongoing economic challenges. Ajaero emphasized the NEC’s demand for the reversal of policies that have contributed to the current economic difficulties, describing them as “ill-conceived.”
In addition to addressing economic concerns, the NEC called for an independent investigation into the recent violence against protesters.
Ajaero insisted that those responsible for the deaths and injuries of demonstrators must be held accountable, with justice served to both the victims and their families. He also urged the government to release all peaceful protesters who are being held unlawfully.
Ajaero emphasized the need for the Federal Government to engage in meaningful dialogue with protesters, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. He also called for immediate relief measures, including food aid, subsidies on essential goods, and other social safety nets, to alleviate the suffering of workers and the general public.
The NEC further warned the government against any attempts to restrict workers’ rights, particularly concerning political participation.
Ajaero specifically demanded the withdrawal of recent advice from the Registrar of Trade Unions, which the NLC views as an overreach that could provoke industrial unrest
The NLC urged all Nigerian workers to remain united in their pursuit of better governance, stressing the importance of solidarity. Ajaero also advised workers to stay safe during protests, maintain non-violence, and ensure their actions are lawful and disciplined as they continue to make their voices heard.
