Twenty medical students kidnapped in Benue State on August 15 have been rescued without any ransom payment.
This was stated by the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a statement on Saturday.
Adejobi refuted claims that a ransom was paid, stating that the students were freed through a tactical and professional rescue operation.
The students, who were from the University of Jos and the University of Maiduguri, were abducted while traveling to Enugu for a convention organized by the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students.
Following the kidnapping, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun deployed additional resources to ensure their safe release.
The police have not provided details of the operation or whether any suspects were apprehended.
However, the wife of one of the students, Sheba Bako, confirmed her husband’s release, expressing gratitude for their safe return.
The students were taken to Abuja for medical evaluation after their rescue.
Kidnapping for ransom remains a prevalent issue in Benue and other parts of Nigeria, often carried out by various armed groups.
