Oluremi Tinubu Urges Greater Support For People With Autism

In commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day 2025, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized the need for greater inclusion and support for individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

In a special message on Wednesday, she expressed her delight in joining the global community to recognize and celebrate the remarkable potential and talents of individuals with ASD.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), autism is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, rigid routines, and challenges in social interaction and communication.

Oluremi Tinubu has underscored the importance of embracing and supporting individuals with autism, emphasizing that the 2025 World Autism Awareness Day theme, “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” serves as a crucial reminder to foster inclusivity.

“This year’s theme highlights that recognizing and accommodating people with autism is not just a moral obligation but a fundamental component of sustainable development,” she stated.

Tinubu described neurodiversity as a reflection of human uniqueness, acknowledging that while individuals process information differently, many autistic persons continue to face barriers in education, healthcare, employment, and social acceptance.

She urged Nigerians to embrace diversity and support efforts to achieve the SDGs, particularly SDG 4 (quality education) and SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth). She also called for an end to discrimination, stressing the need for peaceful coexistence among all citizens.

“On this special day, I encourage all Nigerians to celebrate neurodiversity, advocate for inclusion, and work together to build a society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive,” she added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that stakeholders in the humanitarian sector, during a forum held in Abuja on March 21, pledged to enhance access to education, healthcare, and other essential services for individuals with autism and other persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The commitment was made at a roundtable discussion organized by the House Committee on Disability Matters.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Victoria Jim, Chairperson of the Sustainable Development for African Youth Initiative (SUDAYI), reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to closing gaps in autism support and services. She emphasized that SUDAYI would continue working to ensure that individuals with autism and their families receive the necessary resources and care they deserve.
