In a bid to promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence in schools, Pristine SACC Education and Technology Initiative (P-SACC), a non-profit based organization in Ilorin, Kwara State, recently trained 30 teachers and school administrators on AI guidance for schools.
The event, which featured a powerful session delivered by Dr. Adeseko Sunday Olaifa, a lecturer and ICT expert at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, explored the benefits and risks associated with AI usage in schools.
Dr. Olaifa highlighted the need for AI in schools, citing its ability to enhance productivity, personalize learning, and streamline administrative tasks. However, he also warned of potential risks such as data privacy issues, overreliance, and diminished critical thinking.
To mitigate these risks, he suggested a framework for responsible AI usage in schools.
The participants actively engaged with the speaker, asking questions and contributing to the discussion. The Partnerships Manager at P-SACC, Abdullah AbdulRahman also facilitated a session on prompt engineering, emphasizing the need for context and specificity when using AI to ensure data protection.
According to the Partnerships Director at P-SACC, Sodiq Ajala, the goal of introducing AI in schools is to complement the work of educational stakeholders, not replace them. He emphasized that AI will not replace teachers who do not use it, but rather replace them with those who do.
The participants expressed their gratitude to P-SACC for organizing the insightful event and pledged to advocate for responsible AI usage in their schools.
With the increasing adoption of AI in education, initiatives like P-SACC’s training program are crucial in ensuring that teachers and administrators are equipped to harness the benefits of AI while minimizing its risks.
