Power Outage As National Grid Collapses

The national grid suffered another system collapse on Wednesday, plunging many Nigerians into darkness.

According to sources, it was stated that power generation dropped shortly after 11 a.m. Sources from power generation companies confirmed a widespread grid disturbance that morning.

Reports indicate that a trip-off occurred, leading to a total power outage before noon. As a result, most power plants on the grid lost generation capacity when the incident happened.

At 11 a.m., power generation stood at 4,064 megawatts but sharply declined to 1,203MW by noon, eventually dropping to zero by 1 p.m.

This marks the first national grid collapse in 2025, following a line-tripping incident in January. In 2024 alone, the grid failed 12 times, and over the past decade, there have been more than 100 recorded collapses.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday via its official X handle, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) stated:

“Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, resulting in a power outage across our franchise areas.”

“Gradual restoration of power supply has begun, and we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity once the grid is stabilized. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to serve you better,” the statement read.
