The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has condemned the Nigerian Presidency for what he described as a futile attempt to tarnish his image by linking him to the U.S. election.
Obi, through his Media Office, released a statement on Sunday, accusing propagandists, with the backing of the presidency, of spreading misleading narratives to damage his reputation.
In the statement, signed by his spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, Obi criticized efforts to associate him with Donald Trump, the Republican candidate in the U.S. presidential race. Umar labeled this comparison as an effort by the Presidency to curry favor with the Democratic Party, mocking the idea of linking Obi and Trump while equating President Bola Tinubu with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.
Obi’s team argued that such attempts to discredit him only highlight the current administration’s weaknesses, stating, “The Presidency by indulging in such clever-by-half comparisons merely brings to the fore the glaring weaknesses of the incumbent administration.”
Umar also dismissed other attempts to malign Obi, including false accusations of sponsoring violence and misrepresenting his public appearances. He stressed that Obi remains a symbol of hope for Nigerians, particularly through his transparent and people-centered policies.
The statement concluded by urging Obi’s supporters, known as “Obidients,” to remain focused on their goal of achieving a better Nigeria, despite attempts to distract them with unfounded propaganda.
