On Monday, Congressional Republicans initiated a formal impeachment case against President Joe Biden, coinciding with the start of the Democratic National Convention.
The case, led by three influential committees in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, alleges that Biden engaged in corruption related to his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.
Judiciary Committee Chairman, Jim Jordan claimed the investigation conclusively proved that Biden had misused his public office for the financial gain of his family and business associates. However, the report lacks direct evidence tying Biden to any misconduct or involvement in his son’s business ventures.
Much of the document relies on inferences and allegations concerning Biden’s actions after his tenure as vice president under Barack Obama.
Biden, who is expected to deliver a key speech at the Democratic convention, has consistently denied any involvement in or assistance with Hunter Biden’s business activities, including those in Ukraine and China.
Republicans have long attempted to use Hunter Biden’s foreign ties and troubled past to damage the president’s reputation.
Despite these efforts, the push for impeachment is widely viewed as a response to the two impeachments of former Republican President Donald Trump.
Given the Republicans’ slim majority in the House, it’s uncertain whether the impeachment case will lead to a formal vote. Even if it did, the Democratic-majority Senate would almost certainly acquit President Biden.
