Tragedy struck in Rivers State, Nigeria, with two separate incidents resulting in loss of lives and injury. A road accident which occurred in the Elelenwo area of Port Harcourt claimed the lives of two people, while 17 others were hospitalized after a gas explosion in the Orazi area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The road accident occurred late Friday night in the Elelenwo area of Port Harcourt, where the victims, traveling in a Toyota Corolla from the Eleme axis, collided with a stationary truck.
Two of the passengers, seated at the front, were found dead under the truck, while a female occupant in the back seat remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).
In a separate incident, a gas cylinder exploded on Saturday in the Orazi area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, setting a fire that severely injured 17 people. The explosion occurred during the refilling of a gas cylinder, which led to flames engulfing nearby shops and causing damage to goods. Some of the victims were passersby who were close to the explosion site when the gas exploded.
All the injured individuals were immediately rushed to RSUTH for urgent treatment.
The gas explosion has also caused significant property damage, including burnt shops and destroyed merchandise.
