Rivers Women March in Support of State of Emergency, Sole Administrator

Women in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday staged a peaceful solidarity march backing the ongoing state of emergency and the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as the sole administrator of the state.

The women, all dressed in white, converged at the Garrison Bus Stop in the city centre as early as 8 a.m. before proceeding along Aba Road, chanting solidarity songs in support of the emergency government. The march culminated at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

This rally comes days after a counter-protest by another group, ‘Rivers Women for Sim,’ who opposed the state of emergency and condemned the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

President Bola Tinubu declared the state of emergency on March 18, citing a deepening political crisis in the oil-rich state. The declaration led to the six-month suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Dr. Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Vice Admiral Ibas, a retired naval officer, was subsequently appointed to oversee the affairs of the state during the emergency period.
