Sokoto Implements Payment Of N70,000 Minimum Wage For Workers

The Sokoto State Government, led by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, has announced the immediate implementation of the new national minimum wage of N70,000 for all state civil servants, local government workers, and employees of the Local Government Education Authority.

According to a statement released by the governor’s Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, the policy will take effect starting Monday. Governor Aliyu emphasized that the decision reflects his administration’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of workers. He called on civil servants to respond to the gesture with increased commitment and professionalism in their duties.

“With the commencement of the payment of this new national minimum wage, we expect renewed commitment, hard work, punctuality, and, above all, seriousness from our civil servants,” the statement quoted Governor Ahmed Aliyu as saying.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the timely payment of salaries, assuring state workers that salaries would consistently be paid between the 19th and 22nd of every month.

This move, he added, further underscores Sokoto State’s reputation as a worker-friendly administration.

In addition to implementing the new minimum wage, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has prioritized clearing the backlog of gratuities owed to retired workers. The government has committed N500 million monthly to settle unpaid gratuities and an additional N300 million for retirees who exited service from 2023 onward.

“This strategic approach ensures that by the end of my administration, no civil servant will be owed gratuities,” the governor stated.

He highlighted the contrast with previous administrations, where salary payments were delayed by more than 50 days, creating financial uncertainty for workers.
