Tension gripped Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday after a student, Ariyo Monday, died following allegations of excessive punishment meted out by a teacher.
The incident occurred at Obafemi Grammar School, where the teacher, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly flogged Ariyo and ordered him to perform 162 frog jumps.
According to eyewitness accounts and a video posted online, the trouble began when the teacher brought a trash can to Ariyo’s class and warned pupils not to break it. Ariyo jokingly replied that the dustbin was bought with students’ money, offending the teacher. The teacher reportedly sought permission from the principal to punish Ariyo.
Contrary to initial reports, police spokesperson Omolola Odutola clarified that Ariyo received 24 strokes of the cane, not 164.
However, the excessive physical punishment allegedly took a devastating toll on the student. Ariyo collapsed and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A video circulating online shows Ariyo struggling to speak and groaning while on a hospital bed with a drip. The disturbing footage highlights the severity of the situation.
The police have confirmed the incident and launched an investigation into the cause of death. Ariyo’s body has been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy.
The incident has sparked outrage, raising concerns about corporal punishment in schools and the need for accountability. Authorities have yet to comment on potential disciplinary actions against the teacher or school administrators.
The tragic event has left the community in shock, with many demanding justice for Ariyo and his family.
