Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has lifted the six-month emergency rule imposed on Rivers State, allowing Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other officials to resume their duties.
The decision follows a reported “groundswell of a new spirit of understanding” among political stakeholders, paving the way for a return to democratic governance.
The emergency rule, imposed on March 18, was aimed at preventing anarchy amid a standoff between Fubara and the state legislature that disrupted budget approvals and left the government in limbo.
Tinubu defended the move as a necessary measure to restore order, while also acknowledging that dissent is a part of democratic practice.
With the emergency declaration lifted, the governor, his deputy, and the 31-member House of Assembly are expected to resume duties.
The move is expected to bring stability to the oil-rich state, a crucial hub for Nigeria’s crude exports.
