President Bola Tinubu has met with Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas, the newly appointed sole administrator of Rivers State, following the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.
Ibas arrived at the Presidential Villa at 12:48 pm local time, marking a significant development in the ongoing crisis.
The state of emergency, declared by Tinubu just a day earlier, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months. The president cited prolonged political instability, constitutional breaches, and security threats as reasons for the measure.
The crisis in Rivers State is rooted in a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. As sole administrator, Ibas will oversee the state’s affairs until normalcy is restored. His experience as Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to play a crucial role in resolving the crisis.
