US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for an immediate end to the conflict in Gaza, stressing “now is the time” for a ceasefire.
Blinken’s appeal comes during his 11th visit to the region since the war began, following meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The US diplomat emphasized the need to capitalize on the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, urging Israel to secure the release of all hostages and end the conflict in a way that provides lasting security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive against Hamas has resulted in 42,718 deaths in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Blinken also pressed for increased aid to besieged Gaza, expressing concern for tens of thousands of trapped civilians.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has intensified its operations in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah strongholds and issuing evacuation calls for residents in Tyre. The conflict has killed at least 1,552 people since September 23.
Blinken cautioned Israel against further escalation with Iran, following Israel’s pledge to retaliate for Iran’s October 1 missile strike.
The US diplomat also encouraged Israel to seize the opportunity for a normalization deal with Saudi Arabia.
The ongoing conflict has sparked a humanitarian crisis, with the only medical facility in northern Gaza struggling to cope. The Kamal Adwan Hospital director warned of dire conditions, stating, “People are being killed in the streets, and we can’t help them. Bodies are lying on the streets.”
As tensions persist, Blinken’s visit aims to broker a resolution to the conflict, which has shown no signs of abating.
