Nigerian lawyer, Stan Alieke has warned against the practice of making money cakes or bouquets, stating that it is a criminal offense under the law.
In a statement posted on his Instagram story on Friday, ahead of Valentine’s Day celebrations in Nigeria, Alieke cautioned that individuals involved in such activities could face legal repercussions.
He explained that the offense carries a minimum jail term of six months and urged Nigerians to find alternative ways to express their love.
Alieke also emphasized that ignorance of the law does not exempt anyone from its consequences. He stated, “The making of money cakes, money flowers, or money bouquets are all criminal offenses punishable by at least six months in jail, as provided in Section 21 of the CBN Act 2007.
“So, if you plan to give your partner a money cake or money bouquet as a Valentine’s gift today, be aware that you could face jail time—ignorance of the law is not an excuse.”
