The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to prioritize their health and support one another in the fight against cancer. She emphasized the importance of awareness, early detection, and ensuring equitable access to treatment.
In a message marking the 2025 World Cancer Day on Tuesday, the President’s wife highlighted the devastating impact of cancer on individuals and families across Nigeria and beyond.
World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, aims to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment, with a global effort to reduce the disease’s impact.
Reflecting on the significance of the day, the First Lady stated, “As we observe World Cancer Day, we are reminded of the burden cancer places on millions of individuals and families in Nigeria and around the world.”
The First Lady emphasized that this year’s theme, “United by Unique,” highlights the importance of personalized cancer treatment, ensuring that care is tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient.
She noted that the theme underscores the need to adapt cancer treatments to address individual differences, reinforcing the collective responsibility to combat this global health challenge.
“In Nigeria, cancer remains a leading cause of death, but with determination and collaboration, we can change this narrative. Every individual, regardless of socio-economic status, deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life, free from the devastating impact of cancer,” she stated.
The First Lady urged all Nigerians to take proactive measures by undergoing regular screenings and embracing early detection, which significantly improves survival rates. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives that promote cancer awareness and expand access to treatment. Additionally, she called for collective action from healthcare stakeholders, government agencies, and the public to strengthen the fight against cancer.
“Let us continue to unite in raising awareness about cancer, prioritizing screening, early detection, and ensuring equitable access to treatment for all. I urge every Nigerian to prioritize their health and support one another in our collective fight against this disease. May God protect us all,” she concluded.
