16 Injured in Russian Airstrike on Zaporizhzhya

Sixteen people were injured in a Russian airstrike on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhya early Monday morning, local authorities confirmed.

The strike reportedly marked the first use of so-called glide bombs in the area, according to Ukrainian media.

The attack, which occurred overnight, damaged 13 residential buildings, two kindergartens, and several cars, the Ukrainian police reported. The city lies approximately 60 kilometers from the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian military occupation.

Russian fighter jets are believed to have dropped the glide bombs near the front lines, with the munitions then guided over dozens of kilometers to hit their targets.

The bombs, each carrying several hundred kilograms of explosives, have previously caused extensive damage in Kharkiv and other regions.

In response to the escalating use of these weapons, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for permission to use Western weapons against Russian air bases near the front lines.

However, some of Ukraine’s key Western allies remain hesitant,
fearing that such actions could further escalate tensions with Russia.
