President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for winning the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday.
Okpebholo, 54, secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), who finished third with 22,763 votes. Fourteen other candidates participated but trailed far behind the top three.
In a statement on Sunday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged Okpebholo to be magnanimous in victory, encouraging him to reach out to political rivals and unite the people of Edo State for its development.
The President also commended other candidates for their role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, noting that peaceful elections, such as the one in Edo, enhance the country’s stability.
Tinubu further called on those dissatisfied with the election results to seek redress through legal channels.
He praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for ensuring a peaceful and largely hitch-free election process, reiterating that INEC’s efforts reaffirm the country’s commitment to free and fair elections.
